Tropical Xishuangbanna: villages and tea tour 7 days

The mighty Mekong river, tea plantations, jungle, hikes to traditional villages, colourful markets and Dai Buddhist temples are just some of the words to sum up Xishuangbanna, the tropical corner of China. Laos and Myanmar are its neighbours and the climate is perfect for tours in winters as it will be warm and dry. From April till September it is humid and hot.

This trip is a good mix between nature and culture with its (light) hikes along tea plantations to minority villages. With an experienced guide you’ll get a closer look into the local culture of the Dai, Aini, Hani, Bulang and other local minorities.

Route:
Day 1 Arrival Jinghong airport and transfer to hotel (no guide)
Stay in Jinghong

Day 2 Drive to Mengyang and visit a pottery village and see how they still make paper in the traditional way. Later visit different kinds of Dai villages.
Stay in Ganlanba

Day 3 Visit morning market of the Dai people in Ganlanba and later take ferry across the Mekong. Drive across an area near the Burmese border to Menghun. On the way see the White Stupa and make more random stops to visit ethnic villages of Bulang, Aini, Lahu or Ake.

Day 4 Drive to Gelanhe, the original area of Aini where they moved to about 1000 years ago. See a small local market of Aini people, hike from the village through tea plantation to a Lahu village. Visit a village where they still make paper from tree bark. This kind of paper used for wrapping the pressed tea bricks. Later move further to Mengzhe.
Stay in Mengzhe

Day 5 Drive to Jingmai tea mountain and have a relaxing walk around. In the afternoon, drive to Huiming, hike over the mountains to an Aini and Lahu village. The lahu here are Christians and still maintain traditional way of life. You can can have a family dinner with them and get to know their authentic way of life and culture. Drive back to Huiming in the evening.

Day 6 Return to Mengzhe and visit Xiding for the Thursday market of the Aini. Later drive back to Jinghong and visit the Muangdang Theravada Buddhist temple. Drive along the river valley and see Nannuo mountain, a famous tea growing area of the Aini people.

Day 7 Transfer to Jinghong airport

If you have more time you can add a few days in Yuanyang, the wonderful area with the magnificent riceterraces and colourful markets.
